She sat there on her lonely rock,
Looking out across the ocean.
It once had been her favourite spot.
Now it brought no such emotion.
The ocean breeze still caught her hair.
The waves, her tail swished.
She once had tempted sailors there,
To give them what they'd wished.
But that was then, and this is now,
And time had changed so much.
No sailor tried to catch her eye,
Or hoped to feel her touch.
Once upon a long ago,
The rock had been quite busy.
So many Mermaids basking there,
Could make a young man dizzy.
Then one by one the others left,
Lured from the single life.
But she'd been having so much fun,
What fool would be a wife?
The present had been full of joy.
The future promised plenty.
But now she waited all alone.
A long forgotten sentry.
For all the years had given her,
They'd taken more away.
Her tail no longer sparkled,
And her golden hair was grey.
Of all the men that she had known,
Not one had been quite right.
She wished she'd been less picky.
She wished with all her might.
She'd been living in the moment,
And never planned tomorrow.
Now the future that she lived in,
Was an ocean made of sorrow.
Had she really no more chances?
Was the future set in stone?
Would her choices leave her sitting
On this rocky shelf alone?
The answers to these questions,
I truly cannot say.
For to look at her brings pity.
So I surely look away.
You may choose never to grow up,
But still you will grow old.
Before you too run out of luck,
Find someone you can hold.
And when you do, don't ever doubt,
The choice you made was right.
For on a rock out in the dark,
A Mermaid weeps each night.
The worst part is, she knows the fault,
Was certainly her own.
If she'd only seen it sooner,
Now she wouldn't be alone.
